Growing up in Massachusetts we called these Indian Paintbrushes 'weeds'. Somehow I've come to appreciate their simple beauty and don't pull them any more.

Are you sure they're not Hawkweed?

I was just informed by a co-worker these are called Hawkweed, although commonly referred to by many as Indian Paintbrush.

My Grandmother said those blew into the CC in the dust storms of the 30's. They're not native to the CC. There's a variety thats yellow also. The flower isn't as full, thus not as pretty as the one you pictured here.

I consider them flowers. :) I think they are so pretty, & sometimes pick them to add a bit of color to a large bouquet of picked wild daisies. The last time I noticed they closed at night & reopened. Funny.
