The John J. Boland outside of DeTour Passage, June 06. The paddlewheel in the foreground is thought to be part of the Sainte Marie, a car and rail ferry that plied the straits during the early part of the 20th century.

My husband sailed on the John J. Boland many years ago!! Later he sailed for Inland Steel Co.

Your husband was lucky--or did he think so at the time? My husband would give anything to be able to ride on one of those boats. Of course, he just wants to RIDE on them, not WORK on them!

Mona, hey he has the same idea I do!! I would sell my soul to the devil to get on one of them boats. I would give anything to get on a boat, but I think I rather not work on them hehe. My uncle works on the Wilfred Sykes.

This is an absolutely superb photo, especially for someone who loves history - and the Lakes - as much as I do. Just a misplaced Michigander from New Jersey, unfortunately. Thanks for posting this.
