This is one of 4 trees that 'witness' a survey corner near Toivola Lakes. The older practice of establishing a survey corner in the woods included having Bearing trees which would pinpoint to the wood post that were commonly used as a corner marker. Quite often the "blazes" which the surveyors chopped to show the direction of post from a tree were written on by other visitors. Original blazed trees from decades ago are a rarity because of decay. This corner used cedar trees which survived since at least 1929. If you look at the bottom of the left blaze you will see a writing from April 15, 1929 facing rightward.
